Innovation That Makes A Difference
Eco-responsible
Tunnels
At Bouygues Travaux Publics, innovation drives our commitment to sustainability in tunnel construction. Our Eco-Tunnels approach reimagines every phase of the process, from design to delivery, through pioneering technologies and forwardthinking practices that minimize environmental impact while maximizing performance. We apply advanced value engineering to optimize tunnel alignment and diameter, reducing excavation volumes and cutting CO2 emissions. Additionnaly, by designing shallow stations and utilizing BIMintegrated carbon analysis tools, we enable smarter, datadriven decisions that target carbon hotspots, improving the efficiency of the infrastructure over its lifecycle.
On site, we use advanced technologies like variable density Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), which can adjust in realtime to different geological conditions. This reduces energy consumption and increases tunneling precision. Excavated materials are reused through circular landscaping strategies, turning waste into valuable resources for site development. Innovative treatment processes such as bio-polymer separation, avoid transporting chemicals and support environmentally friendly operations. Our procurement approach prioritizes the use of ultra-low carbon materials and promotes the reuse of equipment wherever possble, minimizing resource consumption and emissions. Through our eco-segment initiative, we apply advanced mixture designs to reduce the carbon footprint of tunnel lining segments.
From Melbourne’s tunnel to Pawtucket in the USA – through the metros of Toulouse and Paris, and High Speed 2 in the UK – Bouygues Travaux Publics is setting new standards in eco-responsible tunneling through bold innovation and environmental leadership.
